12 Objects in 12 Months
New for 2026, the National Civil War Centre is delighted to bring you 12 Objects in 12 Months. Each month, uncover the hidden stories behind some of our most extraordinary treasures in a captivating series of short films curated by our expert Civil War and Newark historians.
From a mysterious Bellarmine jug once believed to ward off witchcraft, to the chilling scold’s bridle designed for punishment, from a colossal mammoth tooth to Newark’s legendary Torc – these objects will surprise, fascinate, and challenge what you think you know about history.
January’s Object: The Siege Piece
Our first story is one of courage and ingenuity in the face of despair. During the final siege of Newark, with the town cut off and funds dwindling, Governor Bellasyse struck silver coins in the castle itself – rough, hastily cut, and utterly unique. These “siege pieces” weren’t just currency; they were lifelines, symbols of resilience when all hope seemed lost. Discover their remarkable role in the Civil War in the opening film of our series.
