Key Stage 3 and 4

Arms and Armour

Join the infantry in this object-based session that examines the military experience of the Civil War. Handle typical civil war armour and weapons, learn how they were used and take part in musket and pike drills. Can you fire a musket fast enough?

The Trial and Execution of Charles I

Re-enact the Trial and Execution of Charles I in this interactive drama-based session. Bring this dramatic moment of history to life and debate the issues surrounding the trial. Should Charles lose his head? Let your students decide.

Survivors

Investigate the experiences of ordinary people and petition for money at the Quarter Sessions. Based on research from the Civil War Petitions Project, this drama-based session reveals the human cost of the British Civil Wars. Working with replica artefacts and facsimile sources, bring to life wounded soldiers, widows and orphans and decide who are the most deserving cases.

Last Town Standing Tour

Discover Newark’s surviving Civil War buildings, including its amazing castle. Find out why Newark was strategically important and learn about the nationally significant events that took place here.

The Trial and Execution of Charles I

Step into one of the most controversial moments in British history. Through role play and debate, students consider competing interpretations of these dramatic events. Was the trial a genuine attempt to reach a settlement or was Charles doomed from the start? Students bring the trial to life, engage with differing historical viewpoints, and reach their own verdict.

Weaponised Magic

Investigate the 17th-century belief in magic and the witch craze that reached its height during the Civil War. Find out how accusations of witchcraft were used to slander important Royalist figures and how belief in the miraculous power of the King’s Touch helped re-establish royal authority.

The Architecture of Faith

Set within Newark's magnificent St Mary's Church, this session explores the religious conflicts that shaped the British Civil Wars. Students learn to read the building as a historical source, investigating how competing attitudes towards ritual, imagery and church decoration fuelled division and contributed to the outbreak of war.
